If he is JUST recording a guitar, get him a 1 or 2 channel mixer or audio interface he can plug his guitar right into a “Line input” so that he can plug the mixer into a computer via usb, firewire, or just the regular headphone output or RCA outputs into the computer’s audio input. There are free programs to record into and the one I used to use was Audacity. Just set the input in the preferences to audio input so it can know where to get it from.
