Chances are a dye sublimation printer will be used. This kind of printer uses heat to transfer dye to a medium such as a plastic card, printer paper or poster paper (which is what most post cards are made from.) This kind of printer also applies a thin laminate which protects the print from discoloration from UV light and the air while also rendering the print water-resistant.
