What kind of person are biotech companies looking for?
CL: For an entry-level lab position, companies are really looking for lab or research experience such as working in a lab at school or having a summer internship at a biotech company. Q: What kind of company is ideal for a recent college graduate looking for his or her first biotech job? CL: Look for a position at a company that will offer a variety of learning opportunities. Be sure that you will be working with a mentor who has a PhD (or an MS with a lot of experience). It can be frustrating to learn from someone who isn’t an expert, especially after graduating in MCB & IB from Cal. Look for a company that allows you to move around within the organization. Smaller companies might allow you to move around more and work on a variety of projects. Larger companies are much more specialized and many positions require you to do fairly repetitive work.
