Following in the tradition of Ultima the Latin language plays a large role in the name. The premise for the story line in Ultima Obscura is far darker than any of the classic Ultima titles. The word Obscura is Latin for Darkness. So in a sense the title is Dark Ultima which I felt was befitting title. If you want to get completely technical Ultima is Latin for vengeance so in a literal sense the title loosely translates to Dark Vengeance.
