What kind of music does the Chorus perform?
We pride ourselves on doing a variety of music throughout the year. Our repertoire covers everything from classical and holiday music, to ballads and barbershop, all the way through Broadway and pride music. Because we’re brand new this year, we don’t have any recordings of us singing. But many other Gay Men’s Choruses across the country have recorded some of the music we have planned for this season. The Chorus performs the classical repertoire typically found in a Symphony program. We also perform Christmas Pops programs and occasionally other popular music. Our emphasis, however, is on the classical choral literature. Where and when does the Chorus rehearse? Our rehearsal schedule is driven by the Richmond Symphonys season programming of choral works. We usually start rehearsals in early September and continue through early December. We resume rehearsals after the start of the new year and continue into March or later. The Chorus rehearses on Tuesday evenings, from 7:30 to 10:00pm at Grace Baptist Church, near Malvern and Cary Streets in Richmonds near west end. The Church is centrally located and easily accessible to our members. Dress rehearsals with the orchestra occur on Wednesday and/or Thursday evenings prior to a performance and occasionally on Saturday morning or afternoon. How often does the Chorus perform? The chorus has one smaller ensemble called Brotherly Love. This is an auditioned group that performs at our major concerts and other performances as needed. Solos and duets in major concerts will vary depending on our repertoire. Are there activities outside of singing I can get involved in? Yes! There are many committees in the chorus that do different things. Also, the social committee plans monthly activities for chorus members outside of rehearsals that allow members to socialize and have fun outside of rehearsals.
