Since the symptoms are so often invisible, Chlamydia can do long term and permanent damage if left untreated. In women, the infection can spread to the uterus or fallopian tubes and cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which can cause permanent damage to a woman’s reproductive system. The damage done by PID can lead to chronic pelvic pain, infertility and ectopic pregnancy, which is potentially fatal. Also, women infected with Chlamydia are up to five times more likely to become infected with HIV. In men, the infection can spread to the epididymis, the tube that carries sperm from the testis, causing acute epididymitis. This can cause fever, swelling and pain in the scrotum, and sterility.
