What kind of leadership development strategy supports guideline implementation?
The nursing literature consistently identifies leadership as important to facilitate practice change such as implementing innovations and clinical guidelines. However, few studies have examined leadership effectiveness for this purpose, and little is known about what leadership development strategies are considered useful and appealing to nursing leaders in today’s busy and sometimes frantic health care environments. In phase one of a two–phase mixed methods doctoral study with an embedded randomized controlled trial, we set out to evaluate the impact of a leadership development intervention on implementing guideline recommendations for assessing and managing foot ulcers for people with diabetes in a large home care organization in Ontario.
