A specially formulated rat block diet is actually best. However, not all rat foods are good. Mazuri is the only decent one sold in stores, but it’s still not all that great. If you’re able to order online, Harlan Teklad is one of the healthiest and most affordable rat foods. A high-quality block diet along with fresh fruits/veggies a few times a week is the best diet. Also, that skin allergy MIGHT have been caused by too much protein in the diet rather than bedding. Not much you can do but make sure your rat is getting a good diet and the skin should heal on its own.
