For some students, the school day or the school year isn’t enough time to master a concept or a skill. They need more time. They need more help. And, sometimes, they need a different way to learn. Districts are using a variety of approaches to help these students: more intensive instruction in reading and math, after-school academies, summer school, one-on-one tutoring, etc. The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) has created targeted and in-depth lesson plans designed for use by classroom teachers. Teachers may use these plans or parts of these plans during the summer school session and during the regular school year to assist students in the development of their reading, writing and math skills. As an example, the writing lesson plan includes focused lessons on introductions and conclusions, how to elaborate, persuasive writing, narrative writing and informational writing, as well as a sample four-week comprehensive course to help students gain skills in writing.
