Russia may be a “Federation” but first and foremost it is broken up into republics. Russia is finding its place with democracy and capitalism. Russia is a vast land that requires a firm hand to guide it. The mafia likes to take advantage of weak governaments and Russia has many assets that can be stolen. Changes since Putin came into office: * the ruble has been stable since 98. whereas prior to 98 the ruble collapsed twice. * Putin has used the excess funds from oil prices to pay off debt, thereby making Russia a more inviting place for foreigners to invest. * he has recently instituted a program to encourage population growth because russia is faced with a negative population growth. * Putin managed to secure a deal with the EU to be its main natural gas provider, thereby showing the word that the EU has confidence in Russia and its ability to remain stable and be depended upon to deliver gas. * Putin limited access to NGO’s and humanitarian groups within the country due to suspicion
