What kind of educational preparation do midwives receive?
A. Standards for the education and certification of certified nurse-midwives are set by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) and the ACNM Certification Council, Inc. CNMs are required to complete an ACNM Division of Accreditation accredited educational program that is university-based or affiliated and assures mastery of the core competencies for nurse-midwifery practice as described by the ACNM. Graduates of accredited programs are eligible to take a rigorous national certification examination. All CNMs have at least a bachelors degree and more than 70% have at least a Masters.
