What kind of contingency plan is Seattle City Light developing for Y2K?
Because winter storms, lightning, and cold snaps are yearly events, preparing for outages and quickly restoring service is a fundamental part of our business. Although City Light expects its power system to operate safely and reliably through the Year 2000 transition, we have enhanced our existing contingency plans to include possible Y2K events. Operational plans are already in place to handle any generation, transmission, and distribution outages. This includes procedures to activate manual alternatives to critical systems. City Light’s power system has its own dedicated communication systems, so the Utility does not have to rely upon external providers for its system communications. The Utility will also have special staffing plans for critical functions from December 31, 1999 through January 3, 2000. Every substation and powerhouse will be staffed during this period. Our Trouble Center will be readied and technical staff will be on alert in case it needs to be activated. In additio
