What kind of community service work do the teens do in your non-profit “The Flava Unit”?
My Flava Unit teens are the best! These kids are from various high schools in NYC and they get up two weekends out of the month to give back to the community! We do soup kitchens, community clean-ups, etc. We generally partner with larger organizations in need of volunteers, but we’re working on our own health initiative for them to spearhead this summer. Some of the kids who have graduated from the program are now teachers, PhD’s, and one is an aerospace engineer! They call me their MM: Mentor Mom. Since I don’t have kids of my own, they are my stand-ins. What are a few steps you can offer for an aspiring radio host? Record yourself. A lot of folks think they sound great but they’ve never heard themselves recorded before. Listen to deejays you like, and emulate them. Doing this will help you develop your own style. And most importantly, be versatile. The industry is shrinking due to technological advances, but if you know a little bit of every department and format, you’ll survive. Wh
