Students are eligible to work as sonographers immediately upon completion of the program. Unlike X-Ray or Nursing, state board examinations for Sonography do not exist, and are not required prior to employment. The American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) is a private organization that offers a Registry Examination that is widely accepted and recognized as a standard in testing the competence of a Sonographer. Some employers do require that the sonographer pass this examination either prior to being hired, or within the first year of employment. The UES curriculum in sonography is designed to help the student pass this examination if they desire to sit for it.
