What kind of bird is this (Gulfcoast Texas Area)?
The bird is a Yellow-crowned Night Heron. It is not rare or endangered. Animal rescue isprobably not interested in this bird. A rehabilitation facility will care for it if you take it in yourself. Here is one in Houston you can contact and they will direct you to someone closer if you are not in the Houston area: http://www.twrc-houston.org/ If the bird can still walk you will have a very difficult time catching it. As mentioned in a previous post, herons use their bills like spears and if you try to catch this bird you need to protect your face with a face shield. The best method is to grab the bird around the neck, just below the head, then cover it with a blanket. Wrap it in the blanket to keep it immobile during the trip to the rehab facility.
