What kind of animal is a miniature muntjac?”
The miniature muntjac or “leaf deer” is the oldest and smallest species of deer in the world. The miniature muntjac was discovered in the Myanmar region of the Eastern Himalayas in 1997. It was originally thought that the tiny deers, measuring between 24 ad 31 inches tall, were baby deers of another species. DNA testing confirmed that the miniature muntjac was a newly discovered species.
Also known as leaf deer, leaf muntjac, Puato muntjac, and Muntiacus putaoensis, this deer is one of many new species found in the Himalayas. Discovered in 1997 by biologist Alan Rabinowitz in Myanmar, it was originally believe3d to be a youth of a known species. DNA testing confirmed it was an adult of a new species. Living in the dense forests, an adult leaf deer will stand roughly 20 inches high at the shoulder and weigh less than 25 pounds.
