What keeps the bubonic plague under control?
In modern society, cleanliness is the largest bubonic plague deterrent. With modern sewage systems, the plague has seen a significant drop off. When a case does arise (usually due to a rodent, i.e. squirrel, bite) it is usually treated with antibiotics and its kill rate of 1-15%. However if the disease manifests in the blood stream (rather than the lymphatic form seen in the bubonic plague), the kill rate with medication escalates to around 40% (this is called the septicemic plague). The worst is the Pneumonic Plague, which rapidly damages the lungs and has a near 100% kill rate even when medically treated.
