What jobs do monks do in mount athos?
The monks in Mount Athos firstly and most importantly safeguard the treasures accumulated by donations from important people during the past centuries. Their other main task is that they maintain the place for eternity and for those who believe in Christ. The importance of the place was respected, safeguarded and treasured by the Ottomans during their 400 years occupation of Greece. In their daily routine they get up early before sunrise and do their liturgy services, and then after a frugal breakfast they go on their respective chores of cultivating their lands for their own produce. Others, do studies or research in the very extensive archives each monastery has. Then at midday they have lunch made by them and then again more praying and then they go on different chores. Before sundown they have another liturgy and after supper they go to their cells.
