What job opportunities are available to materials engineers?
How good is your imagination or desire? There are countless job opportunities. Major industry sectors where materials engineers work include aerospace and defense (companies like Boeing, Northrup Grumman, and government agencies like NASA), petrochemicals (e.g. DuPont or Dow Chemical), automotive (the big 3…or maybe now it’s 4), pharmaceuticals (e.g. Merck, Johnson & Johnson), consumer products (like Proctor and Gamble), plus any number of high-tech “startup” companies in the emerging technology fields of nanomaterials and biomaterials. Careers in academia are also possible…teaching and researching. Some other possibilities you may not have thought about include patent attorneys, even agencies like the CIA!
