What it means if the Homeland Security Department is approved by the Senate?
It will place the FBI, CIA, NSA and 22 other government agencies under the control of one man and one man only. As proposed by President Bush, this new Homeland Security Department Cabinet Secretary of the Homeland Security Department would have veto power over the Inspector General’s audits and investigations. He would have the power to tell the Inspector General to cease all investigations into any of the agencies for wrong doing, especially against any wrong doing against U.S. citizens. It will also exclude the new agency from the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and whistleblower protections. This means that any records in any of these agencies would no longer be available under the Freedom of Information Act. Whistleblowers, in bringing forth matters of corruption or malfesense of any type would not be protected.
