What Isn Self-Mutilation?
Self-mutilation has been categorized into three observable categories based upon the degree of harm and the pattern of behavior. According to one expert in the field, A.R. Favazza, skin cutting, carving and piercing all qualify as compulsive, superficial self-mutilating behaviors. However, before you jump to any conclusions, we must realize that the definition of self-mutilation is not beyond cultural constraints. As Stephanie Dallam states: Society accepts some forms of body alteration as normal. Examples of culturally sanctioned behaviors include ear piercing, eyebrow plucking, and small tattoos. Because these behaviors are considered beauty enhancing and socially meaningful, they are not considered truly mutilative. A better understanding of modern practices and cultural practices shed light onto what is and what isn’t self-mutilation. Suicide is also differentiated from self-mutilation because of the differences in motivations, goals, and desires.
