What is zero point energy?

Zero point energy refers to the energy in the vacuum. This is a qauntum mechanical phenomenon that is a result of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle and the existance of matter and anti-matter. Basically, the vacuum is teh ground state of any system – it has “zero” energy. Below the ground state is a sea of virtual particles made up of equal parts matter and anti-matter. The uncertainty principle says that every so often, a particle-anti-particle pair can be realized from this sea of virtual particles – they become “real”. But they can only be “real” for a short time. If you could somehow interact with these particles, separate one from the other so they can’t recombine – you could extract energy from the vacuum. It wouldbe essentially free energy and theoretically the supply would be infinite. Since there’s no such thing as a free lunch, nature will not permit you to get this energy without working for it. So it does not appear to be feasible to use this phenomenon as a source of en
