What is your favorite city?
I love Boston. It has so much to offer…great restaurants, pubs, shops and museums. Boston is a great walking city. If you’re downtown you can pretty much walk anywhere you need to go. Visit Newbury Street for upscale shopping or Boston Common for beautiful gardens and a ride on the swan boats. Faneuil Hall is touristy, but still a fun place to visit. For history buffs there is plenty to do in this historic city.
My favorite city is Austin, Texas, where I live, but San Diego, California is a close second. Austin is on the edge of the hill country with the Balcones Escarpment running through it, so that the Edwards Plateau is on the west side of town, making it hilly, while the east side of town is flat pretty much all the way to Dallas. The west side of town has some beautiful sweeping views, some overlooking lakes. Austin is also the self-proclaimed live music capital of the world, and I kind of believe it after having seen a live band at a chain restrauant that only had a drive through, with picnic tables outside. I’m not sure where else in the U.S. you would find something like that. Austin’s motto is "Keep Austin Weird," and it lives up to it. We have had somebody who started a company that sold flowers on street corners on the city council, and we have had a cross-dresser as a mayoral candiate.
My favorite city is Florence, Italy. It is absolutely beautiful with its old chapels, churches, bridges, buildings and art. There is so much history in the city including the science museum containing the actual first telescope built by Galileo, the Uffizi Gallery, the David and castles and gardens. The food is amazing and it is near the Tuscany region so it is just a short ride to many scenic cities and wineries. It has a very romantic, nostalgic feel to it, and it’s pretty amazing to walk through the streets of a city that has been so alive for hundreds of years.
My favorite city is one that I hope to be able to live in someday. Rapid City, South Dakota. Not only is it near the Black Hills, it is tucked away in a quiet part of the country. My ancestors are from that area and every time I visit, the connection becomes stronger. It is peaceful there and one of the few places I truly feel like I belong.
