What is Y-STR Analysis?
Y-STR testing is advantageous since it is designed to amplify only the male specific DNA. Targeting the male Y chromosomal markers is particularly useful to resolve mixed male and female biological samples from sexual assault cases. The evidentiary samples in sexual assault cases often contain high levels of female DNA that can mask the minor male DNA present. Targeting only the Y-STR present in mixed samples eliminates the masking seen with the female DNA component since there is no Y-STR DNA in females. Distinguishing the male contributor(s) in mixed sexual assault cases can lead to conclusions regarding the inclusion or exclusion of potential suspects.
