What is wrong with wiki software today?
On Wikipedia and other MediaWiki-powered wikis, a page can be in one of three modes: protected, semi-protected, or unprotected. There are two problems here: • When a page is unprotected, as most are, any user may edit it. This is essential to the wiki purpose, as it allows every new reader the opportunity improve the article that they are reading. Of course, it also is the great weakness of the wiki, as it allows malicious users to vandalize pages by deleting text, or inserting spam, or nonsense, or, worst of all, intentional misinformation. • When a page is repeatedly vandalized, an administrator will sometimes temporarily protect it, which limits who is allowed to edit it. If it is fully protected, only administrators are allowed to edit it. When it is semi-protected, only editors meeting certain criteria (which new editors do not meet) are allowed to edit.
