What is wrong with designer babies/genetic engineering?
It is pretty much a matter of record that no technology has been discovered and never used. If we can figure out how to do it, it WILL be done. If it is made illegal, then those who do it will only be those who have no qualms about violating such conventions. What will such people produce? No. It seems to me that the only reasonable alternative is the most likely one: that the laws have as little to say about it as possible and the floodgates are thrown open to as broad a use as possible. The very disagreements that people cite about the the ideal goal of such modifications are the surest guarantee that I can think of to maintain genetic diversity and the like in spite of such tinkering. To put it another way, there are people NOW who believe that things like vitamins and vaccinations are unnatural and try to with-hold them from their children.
