What is wrong with a washing machine that just keeps spinning?

We have a Whirlpool and when you go to turn on a wash cycle the machine doesn’t fill up with water and it just continues on the spin cycle no matter what you place it on. I would like to know what it wrong with the machine and how to fix it.
