Degrade is the loss in lumber quality and value due to checks, splits, warp, discoloration, caused by drying processes, etc. When considering the costs of drying lumber, capital amortization, electrical and thermic energy, labour, etc., The largest cost-larger than all the other costs combined-is drying degrade. In ordinary natural air-drying systems or in numerous artificial drying systems available on the worldwide market, the average losses in value due to drying degrade is about 10-13%.
