A winterkill is when there is a dye off of fish in an ice-covered body of water caused from oxygen depletion. It happens when the decomposing organic matter (dead plants, fallen leaves, fish wastes, etc.) uses up the available oxygen in the pond and when the plants can’t photosynthesize (produce oxygen) because there is so much snow-covered ice blocking the necessary sunlight to the plants.
