What is Winnie the Poohs birthday?
The Walt Disney Company does not recognize any date as the official birthday of Winnie the Pooh. In fact, we only officially recognize three character birthdays — Mickey and Minnie Mouse (November 18, 1928) and Donald Duck (June 9, 1934). One reason we don’t celebrate a birthday for Winnie the Pooh is that we didn’t create the character. He was created by author A.A. Milne and has existed in story form since the mid-1920s; he was first animated by Disney artists in “Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree” in 1966. Winnie the Pooh (known as Edward Bear in his early appearances in “When We Were Very Young”) had a real-life career as the favorite toy of Christopher Milne (son of author A.A. Milne). The bear, given to Milne for his first birthday in 1921, still exists and can be visited in the Children’s Reading Room of the New York Public Library on West 53rd Street.
