What is widening Participation?
At Queen’s University Belfast, the Widening Participation Unit is focused on encouraging and supporting people who have the ability, motivation and potential to succeed at university, but who come from groups that are currently under-represented in higher education within Northern Ireland. These groups include young people from secondary schools and colleges, adult learners, students with disabilities and part-time students.
This is a key aim of government designed to promote and provide the opportunity of successful participation in higher education to everyone who can benefit from it. Widening participation addresses the large discrepancies in the take-up of higher education opportunities between different social groups.
