This system provides faculty and students with a full range of tools for web based teaching and learning and since is totally web based, you do not need to have any special software installed on your computer to use it. WebCT and Vista are web-based, interactive tools that UH instructors often use to deliver course information and material online. Vista is an upgraded version of WebCT. WebCT and Vista are frequently used for online classes, but other types of classes (ex. televised or tape-purchase) often include online components that use these tools. Your instructor may rely on WebCT or Vista to communicate with you, deliver course materials, adminster exams, or hold group sessions online. A few instructors for online classes create stand-alone websites instead of using WebCT or Vista. You use WebCT and Vista through your web browser. Both are easy to learn and there are online tutorials for new users. View the online WebCT and Vista tutorials: http://uh.edu/webct/help/tutorial.html. WebCT is a tool that facilitates the creation of sophisticated World Wide Web-based educational environments. It can be used to create entire online courses, or to simply publish materials that supplement existing courses. WebCT offers a password-protected environment for all online courses, which is only accessible to registered students, the instructor, and the administrators. WebCT uses the same name and password as your UMS account (also known as UNET account, peoplesoft, maine.edu email account, or Blackboard account). The log in ID for this account is usually your first and last name separated by a period. For example John Doe’s login ID would be, “john.doe”. If you do not have an UMS account or cannot recall your ID or password. Please call 1-207-561-3587, or 1-877-947-HELP(4357).

WebCT is a tool that facilitates the creation of sophisticated World Wide Web-based educational environments. It can be used to create entire on-line courses, or to simply publish materials that supplement existing courses. WebCT requires minimal technical expertise on the part of the developer of the educational material (course from now on), and on the part of the student. WebCT was developed in the Department of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia. The faculty member in charge of the project, Murray W. Goldberg, has had experience building, delivering and studying the success of web-based courses, and of web-based material used to supplement existing courses.
