What is web hosting?
In order for a web site to be available on the World Wide Web, it must be hosted on a server. This is referred to as web hosting. There are several different methods by which this is done. Your Internet Service Provider (ISP), for example AOL, may make limited web space available as part of your subscription. There are also free web hosting services, although in order for the service to be free they will place advertisements and pop-ups on your page. For full control, including the ability to choose your own domain name, the only option is to pay a company to host your web site.
Web hosting is a service that allows you to post your web pages, also known as HTML files, to the Internet. Websites are stored (hosted) on a special computer called a server. This server allows Internet users connected anywhere to reach your site when they put in your domain address (www.yourcompany.com).
When someone types in “www.yourwebsite.com” into their web browser, they are actually sending out a request to another computer on the internet. A computer called a DNS (“domain name server”) translates “www.yourwebsite.com” into a number, called an IP address, such as 192.168.0.1. This is the address of the remote server that “serves” the web pages requested to your website visitor. The server must be available 24/7 to respond to these requests from all over the world. When you obtain a web host, you are actually renting a portion of this remote computer’s hard drive in order to store and serve your web pages. A good hosting company will provide a high speed connection to the internet and guarantee close to 100% “uptime” so your website will always be available.
