What is Waldorf Education?
Waldorf education continues to be one of the fastest-growing independent school movements in the world. Today, HWS is one of over 1,000 Waldorf schools using an approach to education that is grounded in the work of Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925). The first Waldorf school was founded in 1919. The innovative school, with its curriculum that fully integrated artistic and academic work, attracted immediate interest among people seeking a new way of educating children. By 1928 the growing movement had spread to North America with the founding of the Rudolf Steiner School in New York City. The Honolulu Waldorf School was founded in 1961.
Developed by Rudolf Steiner in 1919, Waldorf Education is based on a developmental approach that addresses the needs of the growing child and maturing adolescent. Waldorf education is a unique and distinctive approach to educating children that is practiced in Waldorf schools worldwide. Waldorf schools collectively form the largest, and quite possibly the fastest growing, group of independent private schools in the world. There is no centralised administrative structure governing all Waldorf schools; each is administratively independent, but there are established associations which provide resources, publish materials, sponsor conferences, and promote the movement.
