What is VTEC?
VTEC, which stands for Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control, is a valvetrain design featuring overhead camshafts that feature multiple sets of differently honed lobes. VTEC allows the engine to shift between more conservative and aggressive cam profiles. Airflow is restricted at lower revs to maintain a steady idle and fuel efficiency. At higher RPMs, the camshafts shift to the more aggressive lobes, which provides more horsepower and performance. History The Integra was Honda’s first foray into the “hot hatch” or “sport compact” market. It was manufactured as a sportier upgrade over the Honda Civic Si and meant to compete with cars like the Volkswagen Golf GTI. The Integra traditionally offered a more powerful engine than the Civic as well as better suspension, an upgraded interior, sportier body styling and better brakes.
