What is volatile substance abuse and why should children learn about it?
Volatile Substance Abuse (VSA) refers to the deliberate inhalation of volatile substances such as lighter fuel, glue or aerosols. VSA is responsible for more deaths in young people of school age than illegal drugs. There is a growing recognition of the correlation between VSA and vulnerable young people. VSA needs to be addressed at an early point in the drug education curriculum because of the early onset of experimentation and the dangers it poses. These dangers include the high risk of sudden death even for first time and occasional users. Teachers need to highlight the risks of taking VSA to pupils. Particular attention and greater detail may be needed for pupils who are known to be taking volatile substances. Teachers are encouraged to have a sound understanding of VSA.
