What is Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) Service?
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) uses broadband technology to transmit calls. With VoIP service, consumers can make calls using their computer, a special VoIP telephone or even a regular telephone along with a broadband connection. This broadband connection can be through a cable TV company, over cable facilities, or through a VoIP service provider using telephone facilities (digital subscriber lines (DSL). VoIP technology uses Internet Protocol to transmit the call. (Simply put – it is like email in a way – but instead of typed words, VoIP transmits spoken words.) To place calls using VoIP a consumer must: • have a broadband connection and • sign up with a VoIP service provider. This VoIP information is intended to assist Wisconsin consumers in making their choice of communications providers. Information is provided about the benefits and limitations of VoIP service along with a reference to VoIP service providers. If you have additional questions, feel free to contact Jeff Richter
