What is virtual colonoscopy?
Virtual colonoscopy is a FDA approved, non-invasive procedure, which screens for colorectal cancer. Virtual colonoscopy uses a state-of-the-art simulation program to reconstruct abdominal computed tomography (CT) images into a three-dimensional (3D) replica model of the colon. A radiologist, with advanced training, uses the 3D simulated images to navigate your colon in order to identify tumors and pre-cancerous polyps. The radiologist is also able to identify other abnormalities outside of the colon from the abdominal CT scan.
Virtual Colonoscopy is a new fast and reliable CT scan test, which can examine the colon for polyps or cancer. This test does not require IV sedation and introduction of a colonoscope in the rectum and intestine. It is safer and less expensive than conventional colonoscopy. The images are comparable or superior to conventional colonoscopy. If you are over the age of 50 or at high risk for colon cancer, a CT colonography could save your life.
Virtual colonoscopy is a new method that allows radiologists to evaluate the lining of the colon (large bowel) to detect polyps and cancers. Polyps are growths in the colon that may become cancerous if they are not removed. Utilizing a high-speed multidetector CT scanner and specialized computer software images are obtained that “visualize” the surface contour of the colon. Images are evaluated in both two and three dimensional projections as well as endoscopic views similar to those seen during conventional colonoscopy.
Virtual colonoscopy is a technique that uses a computerized tomographic (CT) scan (a type of three-dimensional x-ray) to construct virtual images of the colon that are similar to the views of the colon obtained by direct observation by optical colonoscopy. In preparation for virtual colonoscopy, the day before the examination the colon is emptied using laxatives in a manner similar to optical colonoscopy. During the examination, a small tube is inserted into the anus to inject and fill the colon with air. Unlike with optical colonoscopy, this tube is not advanced into the colon. The CT scan then is performed, and the scans are manipulated by computer software to form virtual images of the colon. When properly performed, virtual colonoscopy can be as effective as optical colonoscopy. It can even find polyps “hiding” behind folds that occasionally are missed by optical colonoscopy.
