What is verification?

One third (1/3) of all students who file the FAFSA are chosen for verification. Verification is similar to an audit; the school needs a signed copy of your taxes, copies of your W2’s, and a completed verification form to verify your answers on the FAFSA are correct.

Verification is a process by which your school requests certain documents from you to compare the information from your FAFSA application with the information on the documents.

In this process, the schools financial aid administrator is required to compare information from your FAFSA with signed copies of federal tax returns, W-2s, or other financial documents. Differences in data will be corrected and the Expected Family Contribution recalculated.

Verification is a federal process that selects approximately 30% of all students who file for federal financial aid to verify or prove the accuracy of the information that was reported on the FAFSA form. When a student is selected for Verification the College of Southern Idaho will require the Verification Worksheet be completed (if the student is a dependent student, at least one parent must sign this form along with the student), a signed copy of the federal tax form, and a copy of all W-2’s.

Because every FAFSA can not be checked for accuracy, the U.S. Department of Education has set up the verification process as a “checks and balances” system. At least 30% of the students applying for financial aid are chosen for verification either by the U.S. Department of Education or by the academic institution. If your application is chosen, you will receive a letter from the Financial Aid Office at A-B Tech requesting additional documentation. You will need to provide this information to the Student Services desk in the K Ray Bailey building as soon as possible so that we can determine your eligibility for financial assistance. Your application will not be processed further until the requested verification documentation has been received.
