What is verification?
Verification is the process of confirming that the information reported by the student and/or parent on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is accurate. Each year approximately 30 percent of student applicants nationwide are randomly selected by the Department of Education for verification. NOTE: Students selected for verification cannot receive financial aid until their information has been verified. See: verification forms.
The Department of Education selects approximately 30% of all FAFSA applicants for a process called Verification. If you are selected, you will be asked to complete a verification worksheet and provide copies of your tax returns to the Stark State College Financial Aid Office. Spouse or parents’ information and other documents may also be requested. Verification must be completed before financial aid eligibility can be determined.
Verification is a federally mandated quality-control process in which files are selected for review. The school is required by federal regulations to confirm certain data elements on the FAFSA. If your file is selected for verification, the school is required to compare these data elements with the information on your tax returns to verify their accuracy. Your Student Aid Report (SAR) and/or the school will tell you if you have been selected for verification.
Verification is a process that allows financial aid staff to validate that the information provided on an aid application is accurate and confirm a student’s eligibility for need-based aid. At Lewis & Clark, aid application information for all entering students is verified while verification for continuing students is typically limited to only those selected for verification by the federal processor. Financial aid awards for entering students will be processed without the receipt of verification documents but will be considered estimated until the verification process is complete. Continuing students who are selected for verification by the federal processor are required to submit verification documents before an award will be processed. More information about verification can be found in the Verification section of this web site.
Verification is the process in which the information you reported on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is verified to be correct. The Federal Processor may select students for verification because of missing or incorrect information on the FAFSA or by random selection. The University of Michigan – Flint will request certain financial documents from a student who is selected for verification. These documents may include tax forms (1040’s), W2’s, Asset Statements, Bank Statements, and any other income documentation. Oakland Community College will then compare these documents with the information you reported on your FAFSA and make any necessary correction(s).
