What is urgency and incontinence?
Incontinence is when you are not able to hold in wind or stools (faeces). It can be very embarrassing. For some people incontinence does not happen very often and does not cause too much of a problem. Unfortunately, for others it can be quite serious. Urgency is the when you are not able to wait or ‘hang on’ to go to the toilet; you have to get to the toilet as soon as you get an urge to go. Both are common in IBD and will probably need you to think about how to cope with it, and to have support from your parents and family. Help, support and advice are also available from your doctor and also from your local IBD organisation. What can I do about it? Many people have urgency or incontinence, more than you may think, so you are not the only one in your situation. Ask for help: talk to your family and your doctor.
