One can only speculate with regards to Pixologic and no one really knows if they avoid giving release dates on purpose. However, release dates have an inherent issue in that they often only provide an artificial time when something is estimated to be ready. They can sometimes be given with some degree of accuracy with things that have been done over and over (such as making movies), but when it comes to creating software, particularly very complex software involving a variety of different systems which all have to play nicely together, providing an artificial release date doesn’t always coincide with when a particular feature (or number of features) have been added or a bug (or series of bugs) have been fixed. Because things are so co-dependent, often introducing one feature may adversely affect another. Or even fixing one bug may introduce another.
