What is United Ways relationship with the Boy Scouts?
Donors can designate their gift to the Boy Scouts through United Way based on its status as a tax-exempt 501c3 organization. On June 28, 2000, a Supreme Court decision addressed the issue of whether the Boy Scouts can exclude homosexuals from serving as troop leaders. The Court ruled that they could, and as a result, some United Ways decided to stop funding the Boy Scouts.However, our local United Way did not stop funding the local chapter of the Boy Scouts: The Golden Empire Council-Boy Scouts of America. The group was named a Certified Partner Agency for fiscal year 2001-2002. However, The Golden Empire Council-Boy Scouts of America has not applied for local United Way certification since 2002, and therefore is not listed in our materials.
