What is underwriting?
Underwriting involves an insurance companys investigation of risks in association with a potential policy holders application. Through this process the insurance company either accepts or rejects the risks in order to determine the proper premium for coverage. If an applicant is accepted, they are classified by certain risk categories that determine the premium.
Underwriting is the process insurance companies use to decide your level of risk and verify the cost of your insurance. Part of underwriting involves grouping people together by similar risk traits — such as age, build, health history and occupation. By determining your risk category, your insurance company permits your premium to reflect your share of lifetime risk.
