What is UKTV?

UKTV is a joint venture between the BBC and Flextech, the company which broadcasts a number of cable and satellite channels. It has already launched a group of themed subscription and analogue cable channels – UK HORIZONS, UK STYLE, UK ARENA – as well as UK GOLD. These channels will be available by subscription on digital systems. Many of the programmes come from the BBC s archive and UKTV pays the BBC for the programmes it shows. This money is then re-invested in more programmes for the licence payer so everyone gains. And the BBC has promised that every programme funded by the licence fee is first shown on one of its main free to air channels, before it is sold on to the subscription channels.
