What is tyre recycling?
Tyre recycling is the way in which waste and end-of-life tyres are reused as an alternative to dumping or burying them. Tyres have a limited life span. Eventually all tyres get worn, torn, split, punctured, and when they get replaced, what happens to the old ones? Each year, an amazing 427,000 tonnes of waste tyres are produced in the UK. It is an ever growing problem, one of which is not getting any smaller, as 100,000 waste tyres are produced each day in the UK. In the past, waste tyres were dumped in landfill sites, but recent changes in environmental legislation has banned tyres, either whole or shredded, from landfills. It is also illegal to fly-tip tyres – this is not only an eyesore and blight on the countryside, but costs the taxpayer millions of pounds every year to recover and dispose of.
