What is Tussah Silk?
What is Tussah Peace Silk? We add unbleached, wildharvested natural Tussah Silk Fibers to our soaps. Just a few strands of Tussah Silk Fibers in each batch of Shade Tree Cottage soaps give a luxurious lather and a silky feel to the bar and is quite noticeable by simply touching the bar. Also known to vegans and vegetarians as Peace Silk, our Tussah silk is only wildharvested after the silk worms have finished their life cycle. Most silk fibers are harvested without giving the silk worms the opportunity to emerge from their cocoons. Our supplier, a fellow organic company, allow the moths to emerge and fly away, do not allow synthetic feed or chemical fertilizers to be used as food for the Mulberry tree, and a portion of the profits from what they sell go to help fund outreach programs that allow consumers to learn how to raise their own Peace Silk. We here at the cottage will be endeavoring to begin raising our own Bombyx Mori Tussah silk very soon!
