What is transgender?
“Transgender,” a new word for many people, is the self-chosen term of many people who do not conform in dress, appearance, or identity to traditional gender expectations. In other words, females who do not have a “feminine” appearance or identity or males who do not have a “masculine” appearance or identity often identify themselves as transgender. “Transgender” is a term that relates to a person’s gender identity, not to their sexual orientation. Transgender people are not necessarily lesbian, gay, or bisexual but people often assume that their non-conforming gender expression indicates that they are.
