What is total alkalinity and how does it affect my swimming pool?

All water contains some dissolved minerals. The type and quantities of these minerals will vary according to source, geographic location and chemicals used by local water treatment plants. The amount of minerals present in your pool is called Total Alkalinity. The proper Total Alkalinity range is between 100 and 150 ppm and can be tested with a special kit, available at any pool supply store. When Total Alkalinity is too high or too low, it is difficult to maintain the proper pH level of the water in your swimming pool (see below) and you run the risk of staining, scaling or etching of the pool finish.
