What is tooth mottling?
Tooth mottling, or ‘mottled enamel’, is a white or brown stain on the surface of the tooth sometimes associated with pitting of the surface. This should not be confused with stains on the surface of the tooth. Mottled enamel is present when the tooth erupts and is caused by a problem when the tooth is forming. Stains on the tooth surface occur after the tooth has come through and are usually caused by food or drink. Fluoride can also cause tooth mottling.
